Standby consumption

Even though it is possible to get energy from sustainable sources we as a society still need to start minimizing our energy consumption. One easy way to minimize energy consumption is to look at your standby consumption. Standby consumption is the consumption of energy when an electrical device is not used, in standby mode, or switched off. Laptops and televisions for example use energy when turned off and plugged in. Cutting back on standby consumption may save you up to 200 euros a year on your energy bill!
There are a lot of ways you can cut back on standby consumption. Here are two simple ways!

Power strip
Place peripherals from your desktop, such as PC speakers, a printer, ora scanner in one power strip. You can then easily switch them off if you do not use these devices. The same applies to equipment in your television and/or audio system.

On-off plug
Other tools are also available to prevent standby consumption, such as an on-off plug. This is a plug with an on-off button that you can switch off whenever you are not using it. An on-off plug usually only costs a few euros is available at your local hardware store.
