Tips on sustainable nutrition
Eating in an ecologically sustainable way means eating meals made from predominantly plant-based foods. In addition, three buzzwords make up sustainable food consumption: Regional, Seasonal and Organic.
Buying regionally means that the entirety of the individual processes, such as production, storage, and transport routes, are shorter and thus more environmentally friendly. Local markets and producers are supported, which increases the purchasing power and diversity in your region. In addition, the products taste fresher. However, not all products can be substituted, as it is difficult to grow exotic fruits in Europe, for example. Therefore, the rule is: as regionally as possible.
Shopping seasonally means buying the food that can be harvested during the season. Because all food is permanently available all year round, people have lost an understanding of which vegetables and fruits grow at which time of year. So-called seasonal calendars help with this. Here you can find such a calendar for your country.
Agriculture has become industrialized in the last 150 years: more chemicals and more mechanics are used. Hence food certified as organic performs better than conventional food: less use of pesticides promotes plant protection, and the soil stays healthier. In Germany, for example, organic farming is only about 10%. This has to change.
