What is Sustainable Living at Home?
Sustainable living at home involves several actions that help reduce your environmental impacts, such as reducing the need to extract natural resources and prioritizing the use of renewable resources, reducing carbon emissions.
As it is a very broad concept, sustainable living can mean different things to different people. For example, in many indigenous communities sustainability values and traditional ecological knowledge are cultural. In Western societies, there are no mandatory or rigid rules when it comes to making environmentally conscious choices and lifestyle changes.
It’s worth mentioning that the trends of sustainable living have been harnessed by companies engaged in greenwashing (i.e., when an organization does a large effort to be seen as environmentally friendly but it spends less time and money reducing its environmental impact) and entering the eco-market. You can find some tips to avoid greenwashing when buying a product, here.
Depending on the type of commitment and possibilities to do so, we divided sustainable behaviours you can do at home into categories:
- Recycling knowledge
- Sustainable food consumption and other consumptions
- Sustainable water consumption
- Sustainable energies in general
- Efficient use of heating systems in winter
- Efficient use of cooling systems in the summer
- Home insulation
