What is Sustainable Mobility?
Mobility is an important prerequisite for social participation, employment, and the economy. In recent decades, people’s mobility has steadily increased. But this is accompanied by the emission of gases and air pollutants that are bad for the environment and the climate. Sustainable mobility is characterised by making vehicles quieter, more energy-efficient, and cleaner. Another approach is to replace cars by more environmentally friendly means of transport, such as the railway.
As can be seen in the graphs, emissions from cars for domestic transport, i.e., the transport of people and goods within national borders, account for a large part of total emissions. The use of railways, on the other hand, contributes little to environmental pollution. Their networks are not as heavily developed as the road transport, and due to that their environmental balance is significantly better.

The European Commission has established the goal of making the European mobility system climate-neutral by 2050. Alternatives to fossil fuels, such as the use of electricity for propulsion, also play a role. In the following parts we will show how you can make your everyday life mobility more sustainable.
