Water reuse
Water reuse, also known as water recycling or reclamation, involves reclaiming water from various sources and treating it for beneficial purposes (irrigation, agriculture, garden irrigation). It can provide an alternative to traditional water supplies and enhance water security.
Below you can find some examples of individual actions related to water reuse:
- Collect and reuse rainwater: Install a rain barrel or a rainwater harvesting system to collect rainwater from your roof and use it for watering your plants, lawn, or garden.
- Use greywater: Greywater is wastewater from household activities such as washing dishes, doing laundry and taking a shower or bath. It can be collected, treated, and reused for non-potable purposes such as flushing toilets or watering plants.
- Fix leaks: Fixing leaks in your home can save a significant amount of water, which in turn reduces the demand for traditional water supplies.
- Use water-efficient appliances: Replace old, inefficient appliances such as washing machines, dishwashers, and toilets with newer, more water-efficient models.
- Landscape with native plants: Planting native, drought-resistant plants can reduce the need for irrigation and help conserve water.
- Use water wisely: Simple actions such as turning off the tap while brushing your teeth, taking shorter showers, and running full loads in the dishwasher or washing machine can help conserve water and reduce the demand on traditional water supplies.
